Building Materials
Project 1 - Solid vs Void : Experiential Exploration
The task of this project is to design and build any basic shape of your choice in an imaginary volume of 12”X12”X12” space using solid and transparent materials.
Students are required to design and build any basic shape of their choice within a volume of 12”X12”X12” on a 1” base:
The model may use fastening system (glue, nails, screw, rope etc.) at the students’ discretion.
The function of the model is to define a volume within a 12”X12”X12” imaginary space. It does not need to fill or entirely engulf the volume simply define it.
Issues to consider are:
-
Module of material and waste How to work with a material How to turn a corner
-
How to join materials
-
How to express a material
-
How to intrinsic forms, limitations and boundaries of a material in a design process

Project 2 - Materiality of Space : An Experiential Exploration
In groups of 5, we are required to select a commercial/ residential building which allows us to experience and explore most of the building materials covered in the module.
We are required to produce:
(A) TASK A : GROUP (two A2 boards, landscape and a mood board
-
Brief Introduction of the selected building & reason for selecting the space
-
Mood Board
-
Identification of Materials
-
Application of Material
(B) TASK B : INDIVIDUAL (One A2 board, landscape)
1. The Sense of Materiality (Experimential analysis of the Material & Space)
- Design Intention & Concept : How that has influenced selection of materials?
- Space Analysis : Experience within the space.
Upon completing this project, we are able to:
-
Produce a complete documentation and analysis of materials in respect to physical and chemical properties.
-
Identify the various types of building materials (finishes and structural).
-
Understand the effects of building materials on aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building.
-
Understand the appropriateness of material used in context of several factors such as occupancy, concept
and climate.
-
Acquire analytical skill in understanding selection of building materials for a building/ design.
-
Understand the application/ installation of material as finishes and structural materials (simple construction).
